The GLM Community
We want GLM to be a learning community, a place to belong and become, both for your child as well as your family. In this spirit, the school partners with parents to nurture an engaged, vibrant and inclusive community in which we can all participate and contribute our unique skills and talents.
Volunteering at GLM is a way for you as a parent to model social responsibility: that it is only when we are connected and care for the well being of the whole that a civil society is created. Volunteering is also what brings GLM together, helps offset the general operating expenses of the school and gives families a window into their child’s day or school experience.
Parent Volunteer Coordinators
Our school parent volunteer coordinators are our room parents and community builders.
Room parents: a group of 3 parents from each classroom who help coordinate and recruit parents for volunteering and involvement in the needs of the classroom and in relationship-building with other families. In general, room parents meet with the lead teacher on a monthly basis to plan for the classroom’s upcoming activities. Room parents also attend quarterly Core meetings (a gathering of CBs – see below – lead teachers, and school administration).
Community builders: a group of parents recruited by the administration whose role it is to connect classroom to classroom across the entire school, and to work with the Room Parents and Lead Teachers to generate excitement and involvement in bigger school-wide events.
Suggested Parent Volunteer Hours
Each family enrolling a child(ren) in GLM is encouraged to:
Perform 20 hours of participation per family (10 hours per single parent household).
Involve their extended network of family members (i.e. grandparents) and friends to help perform volunteer hours.
